About a Egg tempera
Egg tempera is one of the painting techniques used during the renaissance. Natural pigments are dissolved in a mixture of egg yolk and vinegar (which acts to preserve the color) and are then applied to a wood board primed with a layer of "gesso". Egg tempera is not easily applied; the technique requires thin linear strokes made with small brushes. Egg tempera paintings are long lasting so it is possible for the colors to remain intact for centuries. Leonardo Da Vinci's "last Supper" is an example of egg tempera applied to a wall surface.
