My father loved paintings. Even though I was young, if masters paintings came to Japan, my father took me to see them and inspired me to draw. My affection for drawing grew naturally and I eventually studied fine arts at Kyoto Seika University, focussing on western painting. Mainly oil painting was used in this course, but by chance I had the opportunity to learn about egg tempera painting, which I came to love.
In 1997, I went to Florence, Italy which is where egg tempera painting was invented during the Renaissance. I studied at the Academy of Art in Florence for 2 years and spent a total of 21 years in Florence. During this time, I explored Europe and was fortunate to see and study many paintings.
Studying paintings is a passion in my life as they are a wonderful source of inspiration. I enjoy observing how masters express the light, the humidity and the weather within a scene. I am interested in fresco and tempera techniques found in ancient churches and buildings in Tuscany. In fact, my desire is to use the tempera to capture a sense of time that has passed by... This method presents a unique depth of colours – something that continues to maintain my excitement for the medium.
The subjects of my paintings are painted benches and birds of the Cascine park (one of the biggest parks of Florence where I used to go every morning), small towns of Tuscany and the casual daily scenery which I observed every day.
The art of painting brings me joy because it allows me to hold onto what I observe: the light, shadow, sound, colour and sense of the things and places I paint. I paint to preserve these moments; it is what is most important to me

父が絵が好きで、小さい頃から巨匠といわれる画家の絵が来日すると、見に連れていかれました。絵を描くのを常に勧められていた気もします。初めは受け身な感じだったかもしれませんが、いつからか自然と絵が好きになり、京都精華大学に入学して洋画コースを専攻しました。そこで主に使われていた油絵の具のベタベタした質感や重さが好きになれなかった時、卵テンペラ技法に出会いました。
1997年テンペラ画の本場であるイタリアのフィレンツェに渡り、アカデミア美術学院に入学。2018年まで21年間、絵を描くことを中心にフィレンツェで暮らしてきました。時にはヨーロッパ各地やイタリア国内を旅してその土地の絵画作品を鑑賞して回りました。
私は絵を見ることが好きです。作品を眺めることを通して沢山のことを学んでいるのだと思います。特に配色については、それぞれの土地の光や湿度、天候から多大な影響を受けています。中でもトスカーナの教会など古い建築物のフレスコ画やテンペラ画は興味深く、特にフレスコ画の長い年月を経たことによって加味された独特の風合いは、私の制作上での憧れの１つです。
私の作品は、フィレンツェ生活の後半の10年間、ほぼ毎日通ったカッシーネ公園のベンチや小鳥、トスカーナの小さな町の景色やそこにある日常の風景など、日々の暮らしの中に存在する確かなものを、卵テンペラ技法を使って描いたものです。その時々にふと出会う空気や光は、絵にして留めておきたくなります。描くことでしっかりと記憶に残り続けます。そんな自分が眺めていたいと思う絵を描いています。絵を描いて表現することは私にとっては何より大切なこと。これからも表現し続けていきたい。
